Stone quarrying on the rivers and streams at the Jaflong area in Sylhet was instigated after the beginning of the Second World War, for instance, in the late 1940s (Khoda, 2007). However, the newly formed government of Bangladesh after the independence of Bangladesh in 1971 declared the 188.70 ha area at Jaflong as a stone quarrying site in 1980.
